Carrickfergus is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland, situated in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, on the north shore of Belfast Lough.
For more than 800 years, Carrickfergus Castle has been an imposing monument on the Northern Ireland landscape whether approached by land, sea or air. The castle now houses historical displays as well as cannons from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Relinea were subcontracted by Graham Asset Management to supply Glass Reinforced Plastic Anti-Slip Solutions to a new education suite.
The client required an anti-slip solution for a timber access ramp and picnic area structure.
They required a handrail system around the decking area to provide additional safety to the public and to ensure they complied with the Disability Discrimination Act 2004 (DDA).
In addition they required a highly durable product as the castle is situated on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, rusting and deterioration were a major concern on the site due to sea spray corrosion.
Our Re-Grip ULTRA Anti-Slip Plate was easily retrofitted onto the existing timber ramp to provide an anti-slip solution. This provided a safer, more visible and durable surface which met DDA regulations.
The picnic area was covered using Relinea’s GRP composite decking, which provided the same aesthetic look as timber decking but with all the benefits of GRP (corrosion resistant, highly durable, lightweight easily fabricated). Relinea’s Re-Grip ULTRA Tactile Paving indicated change in elevation to improve the safety of partially sighted members of the public.
Our bespoke handrail system could not be fixed into the ground of the listed Carrickfergus castle. Our GRP designers devised a bespoke system which allowed the handrail to be fixed to the timber structure but it still retained its high strength properties.
The Client requested that the handrails did not have horizontal bars so to avoid children climbing on the bars and risking injury. Due to the flexibility of GRP, the Relinea team were able to construct a high strength system with vertical poles whilst maintaining an even gap between them to stop children from getting stuck.
Due to the corrosive environment the application was in, GRP was ideal to be used due to its non-corrosive and durable qualities. GRP is a cost effective product which provides the same strength properties as steel and timber whilst providing cost cutting benefits.
