GRP Generator Access Platform, Data Centre, Frankfurt, Germany

At a Glance

Relinea was appointed to design, manufacture, and install bespoke GRP generator access platforms for a major data centre in Frankfurt, Germany. The project required a high-performance access solution that combined structural strength, long-term durability, and full compliance with German safety standards. The completed platform measured an impressive 2200mm wide by 16,271.5mm long with an overall height of 1,880mm, providing safe and reliable access to critical generator equipment within a demanding data centre environment.

Problem/Challenge

The primary challenge was to deliver a robust access platform capable of supporting generator maintenance operations while meeting stringent German DIN standards, specifically DIN 14122 for handrails and edge protection. The access steps required precise dimensional control, incorporating ten risers at 180mm high with a tread width of 900mm and a depth of 250mm to ensure safe and comfortable use. In addition, the platform needed to be installed within a data centre, where reliability, safety, and minimal ongoing maintenance were critical considerations. Any solution also had to perform well in an environment containing electrical equipment, where non-conductive materials are essential.

Solution

Relinea delivered a fully bespoke access platform using high-quality Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), manufactured with its innovative Re-Struct GRP Profiles. This material choice allowed Relinea to provide a structure offering the strength and stability of steel or aluminium, while avoiding many of the long-term drawbacks associated with traditional materials. GRP is inherently resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and moisture, making it ideally suited for both indoor and outdoor applications and ensuring a long service life with minimal maintenance requirements.

A key element of the solution was the design and manufacture of a unique handrail system developed specifically to comply with German DIN 14122 standards. This bespoke handrail was engineered and detailed by the Relinea team to meet all regulatory requirements while integrating seamlessly with the platform design. To ensure complete client confidence, a sample of the handrails and flush joint detailing was produced and approved prior to full manufacture, guaranteeing both compliance and build quality before installation commenced.

The lightweight nature of GRP played a significant role in the success of the project. Compared to steel, the reduced weight of the platform components made transportation, handling, and installation faster and more efficient, while also placing lower loads on the existing structure. This was particularly beneficial within the data centre environment, where installation time and disruption needed to be kept to an absolute minimum.

Safety was further enhanced through the inherent properties of GRP. The material is non-conductive, making it an excellent choice for use near electrical installations such as generators and power infrastructure. In addition, GRP offers excellent slip-resistant characteristics, contributing to safer access for maintenance personnel in all conditions.

The completed platform provides the client with a robust, low-maintenance, and long-lasting access solution that meets both functional and regulatory requirements. By combining bespoke design, proven GRP technology, and full compliance with German standards, Relinea delivered a reliable and future-proof access platform ideally suited to the demanding environment of a modern data centre.
