Glanua, working in partnership with Uisce Éireann, is carrying out major upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant in Macroom, Co. Cork. Once completed, the modernised facility will ensure compliance with both national and EU environmental regulations, protecting water quality in the Sullane River and supporting the town’s long term sustainable growth and development. As part of this upgrade, Glanua required high quality infrastructure components that could deliver long lasting performance in a demanding environment. Having successfully collaborated on several previous projects, Glanua turned once again to Relinea for their expertise in providing high performance GRP products specifically designed for the water and wastewater industry.

Problem/Challenge

The project required a cost effective, anti corrosive, and safe solution for the installation of handrails, staircases, and access platforms throughout the treatment plant. These components needed to withstand continuous exposure to moisture and chemicals, ensuring both the safety of personnel and the long-term durability of the infrastructure.

A key challenge was the design and installation of platforms positioned over the IFAS chamber, which had to span unsupported distances of up to six metres. The design also needed to seamlessly integrate staircases and handrails around the tank area, demanding a combination of structural strength, lightweight materials, and excellent slip resistance to ensure safety and compliance.

Solution

Relinea provided a complete GRP access solution tailored to the specific needs of the Macroom plant. The GRP platforms, handrails, and staircases delivered the ideal combination of strength, safety, and corrosion resistance required for such an environment. The lightweight yet durable GRP materials simplified installation while providing a design life of over fifty years, ensuring long-term reliability and minimal maintenance.

In addition to its durability, the GRP system offered significant operational advantages. Its integral grit finish provided exceptional slip resistance, creating a safe walking surface even in wet or chemical-prone areas. The corrosion resistant properties of the material eliminated the need for ongoing painting or repairs, reducing maintenance costs and ensuring consistent performance.

Through this project, Relinea supported Glanua in delivering a modern, sustainable, and safe wastewater treatment facility for Uisce Éireann, one designed to protect the environment and serve the community of Macroom for decades to come.
