Saggart Reservoir Water Treatment Plant

At a Glance

Uisce Éireann is constructing a new reservoir in Saggart to address the current and medium-term water supply demand concerns in the Greater Dublin area. The project involves constructing a 100 million litre covered treated water reservoir at the existing Saggart site, which is equivalent to the size of 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Additionally, a new electro-chlorination plant and related infrastructure have been installed. Coffey, working on behalf of Uisce Éireann to deliver this project brought us on board to design and fabricate a GRP walkway access system around the pipework in both the inlet and outlet valve houses. The walkway access platforms included ladders with safety cages and self closing gates. The inlet room also had an external staircase for rooftop access and a handrail around the perimeter of the roof. We also designed and manufactured Internal and external handrails and stairs for the onsite electro-chlorination plant room and an access platform for the salt saturator bunds.

Problem/Challenge

The client needed a durable, safe, and low-cost solution. The complexity of the pipework in the outlet and inlet valve rooms can also cause a challenge when you are designing access walkways around them. Coffey also wanted to use an eco-friendly and sustainable material.

Solution

GRP was the preferred choice of material for the project for several reasons. As a material, GRP offers a multitude of benefits over other materials, warm to the touch, non-conductive, and high strength-to-weight ratio to name but a few. Our access platforms and handrails are manufactured using GRP pultruded profiles, which produce lightweight, chemical, and corrosion-resistant, easily installed solutions. GRP is an extremely durable and much cheaper alternative to steel.

We carried out a 3D scan of the pipe layout allowing our structural detail design team to complete a 3D model with access to the individual pipes and valves. With 3D laser scanning it’s easy to get a comprehensive scan of the site and collect accurate data in one visit. Using the data from a 3D scanner creates incredibly accurate CAD models. We use the latest 3D laser scanners to capture precision 3D measurements of your facility/work environment regardless of scale.

GRP comes with built-in anti-slip properties, ensuring secure footing for plant personnel even in wet and hazardous conditions. This inherent safety feature enhances the working environment and reduces the risk of accidents. GRP is also an eco-conscious choice – with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, GRP will reduce the overall carbon footprint of a project. Products made from GRP can offer significant environmental benefits because of their characteristically low weight, good mechanical properties, and excellent corrosion resistance.

Using GRP signifies more than just an infrastructure upgrade. It represents a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.

“When requiring a solution to the Access platforms & handrails on site, the practicality and quality of GRP was a perfect fit. Relinea is a very professional and reliable company and has been a pleasure to work with on this project.”
