Problem/Challenge

The current brick walling on the bridge was too low to comply with Health & Safety regulations and current British & European Standards.

Rebuilding the wall was not practical or cost effective, so Relinea was tasked with devising a suitable solution in durable GRP which could be incorporated onto the existing walls.

Solution

To resolve the concern about Health & Safety, Relinea designed a bespoke GRP Parapet system to create additional height on the bridge walls. To construct this Relinea produced a bespoke mould that created a coping profile that matched the existing contour of each wall.

The GRP moulds were filled using Relinea’s unique lightweight infill system as an alternative to traditional timber stiffeners. This ensured that the GRP Parapets remained rigid along the full length of the walls , resistant to impact, whilst retaining the lightweight properties of GRP.

Working in conjunction with Thameslink Railway and the principal contractor, Relinea provided a full design service for the GRP Parapets including calculations and drawings, along with technical assistance to ensure a smooth and efficient installation. Owing to strict possession access requirements Relinea had to deliver the entire product to very tight deadlines to facilitate the project’s installation schedule.

The project required a total of 120 linear metres of parapet coping that was be placed on top of the current brick walls of the bridge and fixed into the wall to provide additional support.
