Data Centre Rooftop Access Platforms, Frankfurt, Germany

At a Glance

Relinea was appointed to design, supply, and install rooftop access platforms for a major data centre project in Frankfurt. The solution provides safe and compliant access to air-handling units, and generators. Fabricated from lightweight GRP, the system was developed to meet DIN 14122 standard. The project achieved significantly faster installation compared to traditional steel systems, while reducing structural load and improving on-site safety.

Problem/Challenge

The project required a rooftop access solution capable of meeting strict German DIN standards while operating within the constraints of a live data centre environment. Ensuring compliance with DIN 14122 and European accessibility requirements was essential, alongside the need to minimise additional load on the existing roof structure.

Solution

Relinea delivered  multiple modular access platform systems manufactured from GRP, offering a high-performance alternative to traditional materials such as steel or aluminium. This included generator platforms,  and AHU platforms. The lightweight nature of the systems enabled easier transportation and handling, while significantly reducing the structural impact on the roof. Its non-conductive and non-sparking properties made it particularly suitable for use around electrical installations, enhancing safety in a critical environment.

The systems were designed using a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach, with precision-engineered components that fit together efficiently on site. This allowed for rapid installation using minimal tools, eliminating the need for welding and reducing reliance on heavy lifting equipment. As a result, installation time was significantly reduced, while improving safety and consistency across the project.
